When retaining walls are failing, tie-backs can be used to pin them in place to prevent further movement. Tie-backs are installed by drilling horizontally into the hillside, inserting a high strength steel tendon, and grouting the tendon in place. The tie-backs are pre-stressed and then locked into place against the wall. Tie-backs can also be used in the construction of new retaining walls, preventing other structural portions of the wall from becoming prohibitively large and expensive.
